Country overview

The Sulatanate of Brunei, located in Southeast Asia on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo, has a long history of oil production dating back to the early part of the twentieth century. A predecessor of Shell Oil made the most significant discovery in the history of Brunei when they drilled the discovery well at Seria in 1929. The British Shell Petroleum  website reports that production from the Seria field surpassed 1 billion barrels of oil in 1991. Brunei is the third largest oil producer in Southeast Asia, and a significant producer of LNG.  The country is a Constitutional Sultanate which has been ruled by the same family for over six centuries. Brunei benefits from extensive petroleum and natural gas fields, the source of one of the highest per capita GDPs, estimated at $53,100 USD for 2008 in Asia.
