Country overview

The Syrian Arab Republic is a presidential single party republic located in Western Asia.  Economy grew by an estimated 2.4% in real terms in 2008 led by the petroleum and agricultural sectors, which together account for about 50% of GDP. Syria's main exports include crude oil, refined products, raw cotton, clothing, fruit, and grains. The first modern oil well in Syria was drilled in 1956 and the first significant gas well was drilled in 1982. With a population of approximately 20 million people, the GDP per capita is approximately US$5,000.
